Concrete Padstone 600mm x 140mm x 102mm – PAD04

The Concrete Padstone 600mm x 140mm x 102mm, also known as PAD04, is a high-strength precast concrete unit designed to provide a solid and stable bearing beneath structural beams and lintels. Its extended 600mm length helps spread concentrated loads over a larger section of supporting brickwork or blockwork.

Padstones are commonly incorporated into masonry walls where steel beams, concrete lintels or other structural elements require a stronger bearing than ordinary bricks or standard building blocks can provide. They help transfer imposed loads into the surrounding masonry while reducing excessive pressure at the beam’s bearing points.

The PAD04 format measures 600mm long, 140mm wide and 102mm high. Its long, relatively narrow profile makes it suitable for structural details where an extended bearing area is required within a 140mm-wide wall or masonry section. It should only be used where this particular size has been specified or approved for the project.

What does a concrete padstone do?

A structural beam transfers the loads it carries through its bearing points at either end. Without a suitable bearing surface, these forces may be concentrated onto a small area of masonry.

A precast concrete padstone creates a stronger interface between the structural element and the wall below. It helps distribute the load across a larger area, reducing the risk of the supporting brickwork or blockwork being damaged by excessive localised pressure.

Typical applications include:

  • Supporting structural steel beams
  • Providing bearings beneath concrete or steel lintels
  • Forming structural openings in masonry walls
  • Supporting beams during renovation work
  • New-build houses and extensions
  • Residential and commercial construction
  • Load-bearing wall alterations
  • Providing a level base for structural elements

PAD04 dimensions

The nominal product dimensions are:

  • Length: 600mm
  • Width: 140mm
  • Height: 102mm
  • Product reference: PAD04
  • Approximate imperial size: 24″ x 5½” x 4″
  • Material: High-strength precast concrete

The 600mm length provides a particularly long bearing area compared with many standard padstone sizes. Its 140mm width and 102mm height allow it to be incorporated into compatible masonry arrangements without the depth of a full-height concrete unit.

Although the dimensions may make the product suitable for particular wall constructions, the correct padstone must always be selected through structural assessment rather than by wall width alone.

Advantages of a precast padstone

A precast padstone arrives ready to be incorporated into the wall. This avoids the need to build formwork, mix and pour concrete on site and wait for an in-situ padstone to achieve sufficient strength.

Manufacturing under controlled factory conditions also helps provide greater consistency than site-cast concrete, where the final quality may be affected by mixing, placement, curing conditions and workmanship.

The benefits of using a precast padstone include:

  • Consistent factory production
  • No on-site concrete casting required
  • No separate formwork needed
  • Reduced waiting time compared with site-cast concrete
  • Strong and durable concrete construction
  • Defined dimensions for easier specification
  • Suitable for incorporation into new or existing masonry

The padstone must still be correctly installed and given sufficient time to bed securely before the structural element is fully loaded.

Installation and structural specification

The required padstone size depends on the loads imposed by the beam, the available end bearing, the strength of the surrounding masonry and the construction of the supporting wall.

PAD04 should only be used where the 600mm x 140mm x 102mm dimensions have been specified or approved by a qualified structural engineer or another suitably competent professional.

The supporting masonry should be sound, stable and capable of accepting the transferred load. The padstone must be fully supported and bedded on suitable mortar in the position and orientation shown on the structural drawings.

Before installation, inspect the padstone for damage that could affect its performance. Do not install a severely cracked or structurally damaged unit. The product should not be cut, drilled or otherwise altered without approval from the project’s structural engineer.

Allow the mortar and supporting masonry to develop adequate strength before applying the full structural load. The beam should have the required bearing length and must sit correctly on the padstone in accordance with the approved construction detail.

Colour, finish and dimension variations

Concrete is manufactured using cement and naturally sourced aggregates. Variations between batches of these materials, together with differences in curing and production conditions, may affect the finished appearance.

Please note: Colours and sizes may vary slightly due to the manufacturing process. Product photographs should be treated as a representative guide only.

Minor differences in shade, texture and surface finish are normal characteristics of precast concrete. Small air pockets, surface marks and slight edge irregularities may also be visible and do not necessarily indicate a manufacturing defect.

Padstones are functional structural components rather than decorative products. An exact colour or surface match between individual units cannot therefore be guaranteed.

Key benefits

  • High-strength precast concrete construction
  • Long 600mm bearing surface
  • Helps distribute concentrated structural loads
  • Suitable for use beneath beams and lintels
  • Ready to install without on-site concrete casting
  • Suitable for new-build and renovation projects
  • Nominal size of 600mm x 140mm x 102mm
  • Commonly identified as PAD04
  • Provides a consistent structural bearing within masonry
  • Suitable for trade and professional construction work

The Concrete Padstone 600mm x 140mm x 102mm PAD04 provides a long, strong and dependable bearing for specified structural applications. Always confirm the required padstone size, position and orientation against the structural engineer’s drawings and calculations before ordering or installation.
