Why Paint Your Decking?

Painting or treating your decking helps protect it from the elements while keeping it looking fresh and well maintained.

A quality decking treatment will:

• Protect against UV rays that cause timber to fade and grey.

Before you begin, check the weather forecast. Always apply decking treatments in dry conditions and avoid painting if rain is expected within the next few hours. If the decking is damp from recent rainfall, allow it to dry completely before starting.

Choosing the Right Decking Treatment

Wood Preserver: If your decking is made from bare or untreated timber, apply a suitable wood preserver first to protect it against rot, fungi and decay.

Decking Oil: Decking oils soak into the timber, replacing the natural oils lost through weathering while enhancing the wood’s natural grain and colour. They’re ideal for new or recently restored decking.

Decking Stain: Decking stains provide a richer, longer-lasting colour while protecting the timber from the elements. They are suitable for both new and older decking and are a great option if you prefer a more opaque finish.

Step 1: Prepare the Decking

Good preparation is the key to achieving a professional finish.

Start by thoroughly cleaning the decking to remove dirt, algae, moss and any signs of weathering.

For new decking, remove the mill glaze (surface finish) using a suitable wood cleaner along with a pressure washer or stiff scrubbing brush. This allows the decking oil or stain to soak properly into the timber.

If you’re using cleaning chemicals, rinse the decking thoroughly and allow it to dry completely before applying any treatment.

Step 2: Apply the First Coat

Once the decking is clean and completely dry, apply your chosen decking oil or stain.

Use a decking applicator or decking brush to apply the treatment in the direction of the wood grain for an even finish.

Use a 2″ paint brush to coat between the deck boards and reach corners or awkward areas.

Step 3: Apply Additional Coats

Allow the first coat to dry fully before applying the next.

For the best protection and longest-lasting finish, apply two to three coats, following the manufacturer’s recommended drying times between each coat.

Ongoing Maintenance

To keep your decking looking its best:

• Sweep regularly to remove leaves and dirt.
