The clear and translucent descriptions refer to the same transparent-looking finish rather than two significantly different solid colours. The silicone may initially appear slightly cloudy when first applied but develops its characteristic translucent finish as it cures.

Waterproof and permanently flexible

Once fully cured, Everbuild General Purpose Silicone creates a waterproof seal that helps prevent water from passing through joints and gaps. This makes it suitable for sealing in kitchens, bathrooms, utility rooms and other locations where surfaces may be exposed to splashes, condensation or regular cleaning.

The cured silicone remains flexible rather than becoming hard and brittle. This flexibility allows it to accommodate limited movement caused by vibration, temperature changes and the natural expansion or contraction of adjoining materials. It is therefore more suitable than a rigid filler for joints where a small amount of movement is expected.

The sealant should not be used to waterproof a structurally defective joint or an area affected by ongoing substrate movement. Cracks, loose materials and underlying water-ingress problems must be properly investigated and repaired before sealing.

Discreet clear finish

The clear/translucent finish allows the colour and appearance of the adjoining materials to remain visible through the sealant. It is particularly useful when sealing around glass, transparent panels, patterned tiles and surfaces where a coloured silicone would be too noticeable.

Clear silicone is also a practical choice where several differently coloured materials meet within one installation. Rather than trying to match the sealant to one particular surface, the translucent finish provides a more neutral and adaptable appearance.

Although clear silicone is less visually prominent than a solid colour, neat application remains important. Uneven beads, trapped dirt and poorly finished edges may still be visible through the cured product.

Suitable applications

Everbuild General Purpose Silicone can be used for many sealing applications around the home, workshop and building site. Typical uses include sealing around baths, showers, basins, sinks, tiled areas and sanitary fittings. It may also be used for selected glazing work and for weather-sealing compatible exterior joints.

The product adheres to many smooth, non-porous materials, including glass, glazed ceramic tiles, sanitary ceramics and anodised aluminium. It may also be compatible with selected plastics and coated surfaces, although a small adhesion test should be completed before starting work.

Different plastics, metals and decorative coatings can respond differently to acetoxy-cure silicone. Always check the substrate manufacturer’s instructions and current Everbuild technical guidance where compatibility is uncertain.

Added mould resistance

The formulation contains a fungicide that helps protect the cured sealant against the growth of mould commonly found in areas of high humidity. This makes it useful for many kitchen, bathroom and sanitary applications where condensation and water are regularly present.

Fungicide does not eliminate the need for ventilation and routine cleaning. Soap residue, standing water and poor air circulation can allow contamination to develop on any sealed surface. Keep the joint clean, ventilate humid rooms and repair damaged or separated sections promptly.

For locations requiring enhanced or long-term mould protection, such as heavily used showers and wet rooms, a premium sanitary silicone specifically designed for that environment may be more appropriate.

Preparing the joint

Correct preparation is essential for a neat and durable seal. Both surfaces must be clean, dry and free from dust, grease, soap residue, oil, old sealant and other contamination. Remove existing silicone completely because fresh silicone does not bond reliably to cured silicone.

Use an appropriate silicone remover where necessary, then clean and dry the joint thoroughly. Loose paint, weak coatings and unstable material must also be removed. If a cleaner or solvent is used, ensure it is compatible with the surface and allow it to evaporate fully before applying the silicone.

Deep joints may require a suitable backing material to control the sealant depth and prevent three-sided adhesion. Correct joint dimensions allow the silicone to move effectively and help avoid unnecessary product use.

How to apply the silicone

Cut the cartridge seal carefully, attach the nozzle and trim it to create an opening that matches the required bead width. Fit the cartridge into a compatible sealant gun and apply the silicone using steady, consistent pressure.

Keep the nozzle in contact with the joint and apply enough material to make full contact with both sides. Avoid trapping air pockets within the bead. For particularly neat edges, place masking tape along both sides of the joint before application.

Tool the silicone promptly using an appropriate finishing tool. Apply gentle pressure to create a smooth, slightly concave surface and ensure good contact with the joint edges. Remove masking tape immediately after tooling and before the sealant begins to form a skin.

Curing and aftercare

Everbuild General Purpose Silicone begins curing when exposed to atmospheric moisture. Temperature, humidity, bead dimensions and ventilation will affect the time required. Warm, moderately humid conditions generally encourage faster curing, while low temperatures and deep joints can extend the process.

Protect the fresh seal from water, dirt and movement until it has cured sufficiently. Do not clean, paint or place the joint into full service prematurely. When used around a bath or shower, allow the sealant to cure in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions before exposing it to water.

Silicone sealant cannot normally be overpainted. Select the clear finish only where it will provide an appropriate final appearance, and complete decorating work before sealing wherever possible.

Important compatibility limitations

This is an acetoxy-cure silicone, meaning it releases acetic acid as it cures. It may therefore be unsuitable for sensitive metals, mirrors, natural stone, cementitious materials and some plastics. Natural stone may suffer staining, while certain metals can be affected by the acidic curing process.

Do not use it on bituminous surfaces or materials that may release oils, plasticisers or solvents. It should not be used for aquariums, structural glazing, food-contact applications or joints that will be permanently submerged unless the manufacturer expressly approves the application.

Porous materials such as brick, concrete and unglazed stone may require a specialist neutral-cure silicone and an appropriate primer. Complete an adhesion and compatibility test before applying the sealant to an unfamiliar surface.

Internal and external sealing

Everbuild General Purpose Silicone can be used for suitable internal and external applications. For exterior work, the joint must be correctly designed, clean and protected from rain during application and initial curing. Do not apply the sealant to frozen, wet or unstable surfaces.

External joints exposed to substantial building movement, structural loading or specialist weatherproofing requirements may require a different professional-grade sealant. Confirm that this product meets the needs of the specific installation before use.

Safe use and storage

Use the silicone in a well-ventilated area and avoid contact with the skin and eyes. During curing, acetoxy silicone releases a noticeable vinegar-like odour, which should disperse as the product hardens. Keep the cartridge away from children and follow all safety information printed on the packaging.

Remove uncured silicone from tools using an appropriate cleaner. Once cured, silicone generally requires careful mechanical removal. Store unused cartridges upright in a cool, dry place and protect them from frost and excessive heat.
