SikaBond® Contractors PVA
SikaBond® Contractors PVA is a versatile, water-based product that can be used as a general-purpose adhesive, primer, sealer and mortar admixture. Suitable for numerous internal building, renovation and decorating applications, it provides an economical way to complete several different preparation and bonding tasks with one dependable product.
The PVA formulation adheres to most common building materials, including wood, cork, paper, textiles, plaster and concrete. It is ideal for use on porous substrates and can help improve adhesion when preparing suitable surfaces before plastering or painting. SikaBond Contractors PVA can also be used to seal dusty or friable internal surfaces and as an admixture for cement-based mortars and screeds.
Its easy-to-use, quick-drying formulation makes it a useful product for professional contractors, tradespeople and DIY users. Whether preparing an internal wall, bonding porous materials or modifying a cement mix, SikaBond Contractors PVA delivers reliable and consistent performance across a broad range of applications.
Multi-Purpose Building PVA
SikaBond Contractors PVA performs several roles, helping reduce the number of separate products required on site. It can be used as an adhesive for bonding suitable porous materials, a primer for preparing internal surfaces, a sealer for controlling porosity or dust and an admixture for enhancing cement-based mortars and screeds.
As an adhesive, it is suitable for materials such as wood, cork, paper and textiles, provided that at least one of the bonding surfaces is porous. It can also be used with plaster, concrete and various other common building substrates. The product is not suitable for bonding PVC or rubber, and suitability should always be confirmed before beginning a larger or particularly demanding application.
Priming Before Plastering or Painting
Porous or unstable surfaces can absorb moisture from freshly applied plaster or decorative coatings too quickly. This can make materials harder to apply and may affect their adhesion or finish. When correctly diluted and applied, SikaBond Contractors PVA helps seal porous internal backgrounds and regulate their suction.
It is particularly useful for priming suitable unsound or porous surfaces before plastering or painting. By helping to bind loose surface particles and reduce excessive absorption, the PVA creates a more manageable background for the following material.
All loose, flaking or poorly bonded material should still be removed before application. PVA should not be used to hold together a surface that is structurally unsound or contaminated. Surfaces must be clean and free from substances that could prevent adhesion, including grease, oil and excessive dust.
The PVA must be allowed to dry or become suitably tacky according to the intended application and the manufacturer’s instructions. Drying time will vary depending on the dilution, surface porosity, temperature, ventilation and quantity applied.
Sealing Dusty Internal Surfaces
SikaBond Contractors PVA can be used as a general dust sealer on suitable internal walls, flaking paintwork and other porous building surfaces. The liquid penetrates the surface and helps bind loose particles, leaving a more stable background for subsequent work.
This makes it useful during refurbishment and decorating projects where existing surfaces require preparation before another coating or finish is applied. However, loose coatings should be thoroughly scraped away, and any underlying damp, contamination or structural defects must be resolved before the PVA is used.
SikaBond Contractors PVA is intended for internal use only. It is not designed to provide a waterproof coating and should not be applied to exterior surfaces or areas exposed to persistent moisture, rain or weathering.
Mortar and Screed Admixture
When incorporated into a suitable cement-based mix in accordance with Sika’s application instructions, SikaBond Contractors PVA can improve the adhesion and flexibility of mortars and screeds. This can make the finished material better suited to a variety of internal building and repair applications.
The correct mixing ratio will depend on how the product is being used. Users should refer to the current product data sheet for the specified dilution and application method. Careful measurement is important, as adding an arbitrary amount of PVA may not produce the desired performance.
Where a project has structural, waterproofing or specialist performance requirements, a purpose-designed admixture or bonding system may be needed instead. SikaBond Contractors PVA should only be used for applications covered by the manufacturer’s guidance.
Economical Coverage
SikaBond Contractors PVA offers economical coverage, although the exact amount required depends on the texture and porosity of the substrate. As a general guide, one litre used neat can cover approximately 6–12m². When diluted at a ratio of one part PVA to four parts water, one litre of product can cover approximately 30–60m².
These figures are indicative rather than guaranteed. Rough, textured or highly porous surfaces are likely to require more product than smooth, low-porosity backgrounds. A small test area is recommended to assess absorption, adhesion and compatibility before treating the full surface.
