Sika Dustproofer & Concrete Hardener 5L
Sika Dustproofer & Concrete Hardener 5L is a ready-to-use, water-based treatment formulated to harden, seal and reduce dusting on concrete surfaces. It penetrates the concrete and reacts chemically with its lime content to form hard, insoluble crystals that bind loose surface particles together.
The treatment is suitable for new and existing concrete floors, cement-based screeds, paths, paving and driveways. It can be used internally or externally and is ideal for garages, workshops, warehouses, factories, industrial units and domestic utility areas where untreated concrete produces persistent surface dust.
Reduces concrete dusting
Concrete dusting occurs when weak or poorly bonded particles become detached from the surface. This can create an untidy environment, affect stored items and make floors more difficult to maintain. Sweeping may only provide temporary relief because further particles continue to loosen as the surface receives traffic.
Sika Dustproofer penetrates the concrete rather than simply forming a decorative film over it. Its chemical reaction helps bind loose cement particles and creates a harder residual surface. This significantly reduces further dust formation and makes routine cleaning more manageable.
The product cannot repair severely defective concrete. Surfaces that are crumbling, delaminating or structurally damaged may require mechanical preparation and an appropriate repair system before a dustproofing treatment is considered.
Hardens and strengthens the surface
In addition to controlling dust, the treatment improves the hardness and wear resistance of the concrete surface. This can help extend the useful life of floors exposed to pedestrian traffic, stored equipment and normal workshop or garage activity.
The product works by reacting with the concrete to create insoluble crystalline material within the surface. This helps consolidate the upper layer and reduce its permeability. Unlike a conventional floor paint, it does not provide a thick coloured coating that hides the underlying concrete.
Suitable applications
Sika Dustproofer & Concrete Hardener can be used on suitable concrete and cement-based surfaces in residential, commercial and industrial environments. Common applications include garage floors, warehouse floors, workshops, factory areas, paths, concrete paving and driveways.
Its internal and external suitability makes it useful for projects extending across several areas of a property. The same treatment may be used on a suitable garage floor and adjoining concrete access area, subject to correct preparation and environmental conditions.
The product is designed for cementitious surfaces and should not automatically be applied to brick, natural stone, tiles, asphalt, resin floors or previously sealed surfaces. Test unusual or coloured concrete in a small area before treatment because appearance and absorption can vary.
Suitable for new and existing concrete
The treatment may be applied to both new and old concrete. New concrete must be allowed to cure for at least 28 days before application. Applying the product too early may interfere with natural curing and prevent the treatment from penetrating or reacting correctly.
Existing concrete should be assessed for contamination, old coatings and surface weakness. Oil, grease, paint, curing membranes, sealers and other deposits can block the pores and prevent the liquid from penetrating. These materials must be removed using an appropriate preparation method.
Surface preparation
The concrete must be sound, clean and free from dust, dirt, oil, grease, laitance, paint and previous surface treatments. Sweep and vacuum loose particles before using a suitable degreaser or mechanical preparation method where necessary.
Any cleaning chemicals must be rinsed away thoroughly. Allow the surface to dry as required by the current product instructions. Previously painted or sealed concrete may need to be mechanically prepared to expose a clean, absorbent cementitious surface.
Check absorbency by applying a small amount of water. If it beads on the surface rather than soaking in, contamination or a previous sealer may still be present. Very dense, power-floated concrete can also restrict penetration and should be tested before full application.
How to apply Sika Dustproofer
Work the treatment across the surface to encourage consistent penetration. Apply a uniform coat and avoid puddles, thick deposits or missed sections. Do not allow surplus liquid to dry in pools because this may leave an uneven appearance or surface residue.
Apply two coats for the intended treatment. Allow approximately 24 hours for the first coat to dry before applying the second. Environmental conditions can affect drying, so check the surface and follow the current manufacturer guidance before recoating.
After the final coat has dried for approximately 24 hours, rinse the treated surface thoroughly with clean water as directed by Sika. This removes residual material remaining on the surface. Avoid opening the area to normal traffic until the treatment and rinsing process have been completed.
Coverage from a 5L container
Approximate consumption is one litre per 5m² for each coat, although the actual figure will depend on the porosity, texture and condition of the concrete. A 5L container may therefore cover approximately 25m² for one coat.
Because two coats are recommended, one 5L container will treat approximately 12.5m² when both coats are taken into account. Highly porous, rough or worn concrete may absorb more product and reduce the finished coverage.
Measure the area before purchasing and allow an appropriate margin for surface variation, application losses and additional treatment on very absorbent sections.
Clear, low-odour treatment
The water-based, solvent-free formulation is low in odour and non-flammable, making it more convenient for use inside garages, workshops and industrial buildings. Good ventilation should still be maintained during application and drying.
The product dries clear and does not provide the opaque colour or uniform decorative appearance of floor paint. Concrete tone may deepen slightly during treatment, and existing colour variations will generally remain visible. Complete a test patch where the final appearance is important.
Helps reduce permeability
The chemical hardening process helps reduce the permeability of the treated concrete, offering improved resistance to the penetration of water and oil. Spills should still be cleaned promptly because this product is not an impermeable resin coating or chemical-resistant containment system.
Important limitations
Do not apply the treatment to concrete less than 28 days old. Avoid frozen, saturated, contaminated or previously sealed surfaces where effective penetration cannot occur. Very dense power-floated floors should be tested because they may not absorb enough material.
Sika Dustproofer is not a repair compound, levelling product or decorative floor paint. Cracks, holes and damaged concrete must be repaired using compatible products before treatment.
Avoid applying during rain, frost or temperatures outside the range stated in the current technical data. External surfaces should be protected from rainfall while the treatment is being applied and during its initial drying period.
Why choose Sika Dustproofer & Concrete Hardener?
Sika Dustproofer & Concrete Hardener 5L provides an economical way to improve dusty, absorbent concrete. Its penetrating action binds surface particles, improves hardness and creates a cleaner, more wear-resistant floor without applying a thick decorative coating.
