Sika Bond Pva Adhesive
Sika Bond Pva Adhesive is a versatile, water-based product for general building, plastering, decorating and bonding work. It combines several useful functions in one economical solution and can be used as an adhesive, primer, sealer, bonding agent, dustproofer or admixture for mortar, screed and render. Its broad range of applications makes it a practical product for professional tradespeople, maintenance teams and DIY users.
The PVA formulation adheres to many common building materials and can help improve adhesion between suitable porous surfaces. It is useful for preparing absorbent backgrounds before plastering or painting, sealing dusty internal surfaces and bonding materials such as timber, cork, paper and textiles. When added to compatible cement-based mixes, it can also improve adhesion and flexibility.
Multipurpose building PVA
Instead of keeping separate products for every basic priming, sealing and bonding task, Sika Bond PVA can be used across numerous internal applications. The product may be used neat or diluted, depending on the intended purpose, condition of the surface and instructions provided by the manufacturer.
When used as a primer or sealer, it helps control the porosity of absorbent backgrounds. This can prevent a dry surface from drawing moisture too quickly from an applied finish. It can also help bind light residual dust on suitably prepared internal walls and floors, creating a more consistent background for subsequent work.
Sika Bond PVA is not a substitute for proper preparation. Loose material, heavy dust, grease, oil, laitance and unstable coatings must still be removed before application. Any surface being treated must be sound enough to support the proposed finish.
Primer and sealer
Porous backgrounds such as plaster, concrete and masonry can absorb moisture at different rates. Applying Sika Bond PVA at the recommended dilution can help reduce excessive suction and create a more uniform surface before plastering, painting or other compatible finishing work.
It may also be used as a general dust sealer on suitable internal surfaces, including areas affected by light surface dusting or flaking paintwork. All poorly bonded material should be removed first. PVA should never be used simply to stick down loose paint, damaged plaster or an otherwise unsound background.
The correct dilution and application method will depend on the surface and intended finish. Always refer to the product label and current Sika data sheet rather than applying one general dilution ratio to every project. Highly porous or textured backgrounds may require more product than smooth, less absorbent surfaces.
General-purpose adhesive
Sika Bond PVA can be used as an adhesive for wood, cork, paper, cardboard, textiles and other compatible materials. At least one of the surfaces should be porous so that moisture can escape and the adhesive can dry correctly. The product may also bond plaster, concrete and ceramics in appropriate internal applications.
For the best results, ensure both surfaces are clean and free from contamination. Apply the adhesive evenly, bring the components together and hold or clamp them securely until sufficient bond strength has developed. Drying time will vary according to temperature, ventilation, humidity, application thickness and the absorbency of the materials.
This product is not recommended for bonding PVC or rubber. It should also not be treated as a specialist structural adhesive or used where failure of the bond could create a safety risk. Structural, load-bearing and safety-critical applications require appropriate mechanical fixings or an adhesive specifically approved for the purpose.
Mortar, screed and render admixture
Sika Bond PVA can be incorporated into compatible cement-based mortar, screed and render mixes in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. Used correctly, it helps improve adhesion and can increase the flexibility of the finished material. This can be beneficial when completing internal repairs, applying screeds or renders and working on backgrounds where improved bonding performance is required.
Accurate measurement is important when using any admixture. Do not add an estimated quantity without checking the specified mixing ratio for the application. Excessive or insufficient PVA may affect workability, drying and final performance. Cement, aggregate and water proportions must also remain appropriate for the intended mix.
The product is not a waterproofing admixture. Standard Sika Bond PVA is intended for internal use and should not be selected for exterior applications or areas exposed to persistent moisture. A suitable SBR or specialist waterproof bonding product should be used where resistance to external weather, regular wetting or water re-emulsification is required.
Bonding agent for plaster and cement-based materials
Sika Bond PVA can be used as a bonding agent when applying compatible plaster, screed or render to suitable internal backgrounds. Depending on the application, the following material may need to be placed while the PVA bonding coat remains tacky. Allowing a bonding coat to dry completely can create an unsuitable film in some situations, so the current application instructions must be followed carefully.
Before starting, make sure the background is clean, sound and capable of supporting the new material. Remove laitance, loose particles, dust, oil, grease and incompatible coatings. Smooth or difficult surfaces may require mechanical preparation or a specialist primer instead of general-purpose PVA.
Internal filler applications
The product can also be combined with compatible materials such as plaster or wood shavings to create a basic internal filler for selected repair tasks. Any homemade filler must only be used where its strength, appearance and performance are appropriate. For deep repairs, decorative finishing or movement-prone gaps, a purpose-made filling compound will normally provide more predictable results.
Application and cleaning
Mix or shake the product as directed before use. Depending on the job, Sika Bond PVA can normally be applied using a brush, roller or suitable applicator, or measured into an approved cement-based mixture. Spread the product evenly and avoid leaving unnecessary pools or runs.
Clean tools and remove excess uncured PVA immediately after use with cold, clean water. Once the product has dried, removal may be more difficult and could require mechanical cleaning. Protect adjacent surfaces from splashes, particularly finished timber, glass and decorative materials.
Coverage and storage
Coverage varies significantly according to dilution, surface porosity and texture. Sika indicates an approximate coverage of 6–12m² per litre when used neat and approximately 30–60m² per litre when diluted at 1:4. These figures are indicative and actual consumption should be established with a small site trial.
Store Sika Bond PVA in its original, tightly closed container in cool, dry conditions between approximately +5°C and +25°C. Protect it from frost because freezing or storage outside the recommended temperature range can damage the formulation and reduce its usable life.
Important limitations
Sika Bond PVA is intended for internal use only. Do not use it on exterior walls, outside renders or surfaces exposed to rain and persistent moisture. It does not adhere to PVC or rubber and should not be applied to frozen, saturated, contaminated or structurally unsound backgrounds.
PVA is not always the correct primer for tiling, especially in wet areas or when working with cement-based tile adhesives. Check the instructions issued by the tile and adhesive manufacturers before applying PVA to a tiling background. A specialist acrylic or polymer primer may be required instead.
