Sika® Blue Grit

Sika® Blue Grit is a ready-to-use plaster bonding primer designed to improve adhesion on smooth, low-suction and difficult internal surfaces. The primer contains a carefully selected aggregate that dries to create a rough, textured finish. This texture provides a mechanical key onto which compatible plaster systems can grip more effectively.

It is particularly useful when plastering backgrounds that offer little natural suction or surface texture, such as smooth concrete, previously painted walls and existing plaster. Its distinctive blue colour makes treated areas easy to identify, helping the user achieve more consistent application and spot any sections that may have been missed.

Creates a textured mechanical key

Traditional plaster adheres most effectively to a sound surface with the right combination of suction and texture. Very smooth or dense backgrounds may not provide enough grip, while some existing coatings can prevent a dependable bond from forming. Sika Blue Grit addresses this by leaving a textured aggregate finish on the prepared surface.

Once the coating has dried fully, the embedded grit creates a physical key for the new plaster. This helps reduce the risk of poor adhesion caused by an excessively smooth substrate. The product also helps provide a more consistent background across areas containing materials with different levels of suction.

Blue Grit is a bonding primer and is not intended to repair an unstable wall. Loose plaster, weak paint, dust and contamination must be removed before it is applied. The completed installation will only be as strong as the surface to which the primer has bonded.

Ideal for smooth and low-suction surfaces

Sika Blue Grit is suited to many difficult internal backgrounds that require additional preparation before plastering. Typical applications include smooth concrete, dense plaster, sound painted surfaces and other compatible low-suction substrates.

It can be especially useful during refurbishment work where an existing painted wall is to be replastered. Providing the paint is firmly bonded and compatible with the primer, Blue Grit can create the textured surface needed for the subsequent plaster coat. Glossy or very smooth coatings may require cleaning and mechanical abrasion before priming.

Compatibility should always be checked when working over specialist paints, waterproof coatings, distemper, limewash, wallpaper residue or surfaces affected by damp. A small trial area can confirm whether the primer bonds effectively before the full wall or ceiling is treated.

Ready-to-use formulation

Sika Blue Grit is supplied ready to use, removing the need to measure water or mix separate components. The contents must still be stirred thoroughly before and during application. The aggregate can settle within the container during storage, and inadequate mixing may produce an uneven distribution of grit across the surface.

Use a clean mixing paddle or suitable hand tool to blend the product until the colour and texture are consistent throughout. Do not dilute the primer unless this is expressly permitted by the current manufacturer instructions. Adding water could alter its consistency, aggregate distribution and bonding performance.

Visible blue colour

The blue colour provides a clear visual guide while the primer is being applied. Against most common wall backgrounds, it allows the installer to identify untreated patches, thinly coated areas and inconsistencies. This can make it easier to achieve continuous coverage across the complete plastering area.

The colour is an application aid rather than a decorative finish. Sika Blue Grit should be covered with a compatible plaster system after it has dried in accordance with the manufacturer’s guidance. It is not intended to remain exposed
