Bostik Universal Repair Gaffer Tape 50mm x 20m
Bostik Universal Repair Gaffer Tape 50mm x 20m is a strong and versatile cloth-backed tape designed for everyday indoor repairs and maintenance. Also commonly described as duct tape or repair tape, it combines a durable polythene-coated cloth backing with a pressure-sensitive adhesive. It can be used for patching, sealing, bundling, reinforcing and holding together a wide range of suitable household, workshop and building materials.
Buildland supplies this useful repair tape in two practical colours: Grey and Black. Select the colour that best suits the surface, repair or working environment. Grey provides the familiar appearance associated with traditional duct tape, while Black offers a darker and more discreet finish on black equipment, pipework, cables and other dark-coloured materials.
Strong tape for everyday indoor repairs
Bostik Universal Repair Tape provides a strong, durable bond for basic repair and maintenance tasks. Its flexible cloth construction allows it to follow the shape of many smooth and semi-smooth surfaces, while the polythene coating provides useful resistance to water, wear and everyday handling.
Typical applications include temporarily patching damaged household items, covering cracks or splits, joining torn sections, bundling compatible objects and reinforcing vulnerable areas. It can also be used to organise suitable cables, secure protective coverings or hold components in position during general maintenance work.
This is an indoor repair tape and should not be confused with Bostik Max Repair Tape, which is intended for more demanding waterproof and exterior repairs. Universal Repair Tape is water-resistant, but it should not be described or used as a completely waterproof solution for permanent leaks, continuous immersion or prolonged outdoor exposure.
Adheres to many common materials
The pressure-sensitive adhesive is suitable for a wide range of materials commonly found around homes, workshops and building sites. These include wood, metal, rubber, leather, stone and many types of plastic. The tape can be applied to smooth and semi-smooth surfaces, provided the area is clean, dry and free from contaminants.
Surface type and condition can affect adhesion. Textured, dusty, oily or highly uneven backgrounds may prevent the adhesive from making complete contact. Painted or delicate surfaces should be tested in an inconspicuous area before use, especially if the tape will eventually be removed.
The product is not suitable for polypropylene, commonly abbreviated to PP, or PTFE surfaces such as Teflon. It should also not be applied where failure of the tape could create a safety risk. Always choose a specialist product for structural, high-load or safety-critical repairs.
Easy to tear and apply
Bostik Universal Repair Gaffer Tape can be torn by hand, helping users complete quick repairs without needing scissors or a knife. The cloth reinforcement allows the tape to tear across its width while retaining strength along the length of the applied strip. It can still be cut with scissors when a particularly neat or precise edge is required.
The tape measures 50mm wide, providing useful coverage for cracks, joints and damaged areas without becoming unnecessarily difficult to handle. Each roll contains 20 metres of tape, making it suitable for keeping in a toolbox, maintenance cupboard, garage, workshop or trade vehicle for everyday indoor jobs.
How to prepare the surface
Correct preparation will help the tape deliver its best adhesion. The receiving surface must be clean, dry and free from dust, dirt, grease, oil and loose material. Wipe away contamination using an appropriate cleaning method and allow the area to dry completely before applying the tape.
Where possible, apply the tape to a firm, smooth section of the material. Avoid touching the exposed adhesive because oil and dirt from the fingers can reduce its performance. Cut or tear a suitable length and position it carefully over the area being repaired.
Applying Bostik Universal Repair Tape
Lay the tape down gradually, keeping it smooth as it contacts the surface. Press firmly and evenly across the entire strip for approximately 30 seconds. Particular attention should be given to the edges and any changes in surface shape. Strong, even pressure helps remove trapped air bubbles and ensures that the pressure-sensitive adhesive makes effective contact with the material.
When wrapping or bundling an item, overlap the tape sufficiently to produce a secure hold. Do not stretch it excessively during application, as this may cause the tape to lift or pull back later. For larger patches, apply additional strips with an even overlap rather than leaving gaps between them.
Water and temperature resistance
The polythene-coated backing gives the tape useful water resistance for general indoor maintenance. This can help protect a temporary repair from occasional splashes or moisture. It is not intended for use underwater or as a permanent repair to pressurised pipes, plumbing systems, tanks or other components where a leak could cause damage.
Bostik Universal Repair Tape also resists UV exposure and temperature variations. The manufacturer’s technical data states a temperature-resistance range from approximately -10°C to +65°C. This relates to the tape’s resistance after application and does not make it suitable for every high-temperature, exterior or specialist application.
Low-odour and removable
The tape has a low-odour formulation, making it more comfortable to use during indoor repair and maintenance work. It is also designed for residue-free removal, which can be helpful for temporary fixes. Results will depend on the surface, length of application, temperature and exposure conditions, so a test patch is recommended on decorative or delicate materials.
If adhesive residue remains after the tape is removed, Bostik advises wiping it with a cloth and acetone. Acetone can damage paint, plastics, varnishes and other finishes, so compatibility must always be checked on a hidden section first. Follow the cleaner manufacturer’s safety instructions and ensure adequate ventilation.
Important usage limitations
Bostik Universal Repair Tape is not an electrical insulation tape and must not be used as a substitute for an approved electrical product. It should not be relied upon for structural repairs, lifting, load restraint or applications where failure could cause injury or property damage. It is intended for basic indoor repairs rather than permanent professional repairs to critical components.
For exterior repairs, underwater applications, active leaks or particularly demanding conditions, select a specialist tape designed and approved for that purpose. Users should also check compatibility before application to valuable, coated or sensitive materials.
