Surface preparation

How to apply Black Jack Flashing Tape
Measure the repair and cut the tape to the required length using suitable shears or a sharp knife. A straight, accurately cut piece will be easier to position and finish. Where possible, prepare manageable lengths rather than attempting to control an excessively long strip.
Position the tape before removing the release film and check that it will cover the required area. Peel back a short section of the liner and press the exposed adhesive onto the starting point. Continue removing the backing gradually while smoothing the tape onto the surface.
Work from the centre towards the edges to remove trapped air and prevent creases. Press firmly over the entire surface using a seam roller or rounded tool, paying particular attention to edges, corners and changes in level.
Do not rely on light hand contact alone. Firm, even pressure is required to activate the adhesive and establish a reliable bond with the receiving material.
Overlaps and detailing
Where more than one length is required, arrange the overlap so that water flows over the joint rather than against it. Provide the overlap specified by the manufacturer and press both layers together firmly.

Bitumen-rubber adhesives become firmer in cold conditions and may develop reduced initial tack. Store the roll at a suitable temperature before use and avoid application during frost, rain or extremely cold weather.
In cooler conditions, gently warming the tape and substrate may improve flexibility and adhesion, but only use a safe method permitted by the manufacturer. Never expose the tape, bitumen or surrounding roofing materials to a naked flame.
High temperatures can make the adhesive softer and more difficult to handle. Keep the tape protected from direct heat before installation and apply it carefully without stretching.
Important limitations
Everbuild Black Jack Flashing Tape is intended for suitable flashing, sealing and repair work. It is not a structural product and must not be used to support roof components or replace necessary mechanical fixings.
Compatibility should be checked before use on plastics, membranes, coatings and unfamiliar roofing materials. Some flexible plastics or surfaces containing oils and plasticisers can interfere with the bituminous adhesive.
The tape should not be applied over active movement joints, standing water, loose roofing material or unresolved structural defects. It is designed to prevent water entry through correctly prepared details, not to repair major roof failure.
Storage and handling
Store the roll in its original packaging in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and excessive heat. Keep it flat and protected from crushing or damage to the edges. A distorted roll can be more difficult to apply smoothly.
